¿Debería cada organización benéfica intentar no ser necesaria? Esta idea audaz y provocadora es debatida frecuentemente en el sector de las organizaciones benéficas, y surgió de nuevo con una líder de beneficencia en el debate para este informe. El principio subyacente es simple. Si una organización benéfica tiene éxito en lograr su misión, no le quedará nada más por hacer.
Ya sea que esté de acuerdo o no con esta afirmación, la misma destaca la importancia de que las organizaciones benéficas midan su impacto de forma eficiente. Porque el impacto es la medida utilizada para saber si las organizaciones benéficas están implementando su estrategia con éxito y si están avanzando en su misión. En palabras simples, la medición del impacto ya no puede ser considerada como algo “deseable”. Existir solo para continuar existiendo no puede ser el futuro de las organizaciones benéficas.
Las donaciones caritativas han disminuido en todo el mundo1. En algunos países, junto a un torrente de titulares negativos, la confianza del público en las organizaciones benéficas ha comenzado a debilitarse2. En otros, los niveles de confianza son más fuertes, pero aún así existen preguntas sobre cómo exactamente las donaciones ayudan a las causas que apoyan3. Una parte de esta inquietud se debe a la falta de información adecuada sobre el impacto como alternativa a las medidas financieras de la eficacia.
Pero además las organizaciones benéficas se enfrentan a barreras significativas. No menos importante es garantizar que tienen las habilidades y los recursos adecuados para medir, comprender y comunicar su impacto de manera apropiada.
Asimismo, no existe una metodología reconocida universalmente para medir el impacto. Esto se debe a que las organizaciones benéficas no comparten la misma misión ni operan en entornos uniformes. Por ejemplo, una organización benéfica de ayuda internacional tendrá objetivos muy diferentes a una organización benéfica para la conservación o para el patrimonio. El amplio ecosistema de donantes y beneficiarios también agrega otra capa de complejidad. Por este motivo, el impacto significará diferentes cosas para diferentes partes del sector de organizaciones sin fines de lucro.
Las organizaciones benéficas de todo el mundo con las cuales hemos hablado para el informe “Impacto en acción” reconocen que demostrar el impacto es fundamental para una gobernanza efectiva. Medir el impacto genuino del trabajo permitirá a las organizaciones benéficas demostrar a los donantes y las partes interesadas los resultados posibles más precisos. Esta información también puede brindar datos sobre las estrategias futuras y permitir que las organizaciones benéficas comprendan los riesgos del fracaso y los beneficios del éxito.
En este informe presentamos los resultados de nuestras conversaciones con treinta personalidades importantes de organizaciones benéficas de todo el mundo.
